Snow Sports New Zealand Secures FIS Funding

Lake Wanaka, New Zealand - 20 November 2009 - Snow Sports New Zealand (SSNZ), the national sports organization for Snow Sports, today announced that it has secured $15,000CHF (Swiss Francs) in FIS Solidarity funding that will contribute towards providing infrastructure for the increasing number of national and international level events being held in New Zealand.

"This funding from FIS is testament to their increased confidence in our abilities to host world-class events that in turn serve to develop the sports as a whole," commented Ross Palmer, SSNZ CEO.

"We are appreciative of their support and for the ability it gives us to provide on-mountain infrastructure that provides a direct benefit to athletes and other stakeholders."

The funds will enable SSNZ to secure items critical to events such as timing equipment, data management, safety fences and other items necessary to run national and international events.

While the success of this application hinged on the commitment by SSNZ to host the 2010 Junior World Championships, the equipment will continue to provide the infrastructure necessary for the multitude of on-snow events being held throughout the country for years to come.

What is FIS Solidarity?

The basic philosophy for support from FIS Solidarity is to contribute towards assisting special projects or activities that are not part of the regular day-to-day work of a National Ski Association and for which the applicant has shown initiative and efforts in obtaining support from other sources.

FIS Solidarity programme is designed to assist active National Ski Associations with the development of the sport in their country. Support is specifically targeted at those Member Associations who do not profit from the income generated through rights for the organisation of World Cup races or through sponsorship for their National Ski Teams.

Snow Sports New Zealand (SSNZ) is the FIS (International Ski Federation) and New Zealand Olympic Committee-recognised National Sports Organisation (NSO) representing snow sports in New Zealand. SSNZ exists for the benefit of its member organisations, all of whom seek to open the door to new and existing skiers and riders to enjoy the thrill of sliding on snow.
